Biography
Born and raised in a family of fruit farmers and (hobby-)bakers, Roel Van der Meulen was inspired by food from the very beginning. He holds a master’s degree in Bio-Engineering from the University of Brussels (2002) and obtained his PhD in Applied Biological Sciences in 2007, exploring on the science of sourdough and gut fermentation. He started his professional career at Lantmännen Unibake where he worked for 7 years as R&D Manager for the Belgian division. In 2014, he moved to Vandemoortele to set-up the strategic research for the Vandemoortele Bakery division, where today he is R&D and Innovation Director and member of the management team. Roel provides support to the Belgian and European Federation of Industrial Bakeries (FGBB & AIBI) as technical expert. Above all he loves to bake at home together with his wife and three kids.
